The Story of Lance

This story was written to help educate preschoolers about Lance Armstrong's remarkable story and the principles of the Lance Armstrong Foundation; that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything.

Lance Armstrong was a kid
A kid just like you
He lived with his mom
Which you probably knew

Lance wasn’t like
All the rest of the boys
He didn’t like to play
With any old toys

There was only one thing
That Lance really liked
When Lance was a boy
His mom gave him a bike

He rode that bike
All across his neighborhood
He rode it so fast
That he became quite good

Lance grew up riding
His bike in all places
He even would race it
In bicycle races

As Lance grew quite older
He won all the time
Life was all fun
In the Texas sunshine

Then all of the sudden
Lance didn’t feel quite so right
He went to his doctor
One October night

The doctor told Lance
To get into bed
He listened, took x-rays
And then the doctor said:

"Lance I must tell you…"
"Tell me doctor, please!"
"I think you have cancer.
It’s a really bad disease."

Lance was in shock
As he laid in the bed
Cancer could kill him
He could soon be dead

"Doctor, can you fix me?"
"Lance there is no cure.
We can try to make you better
But I can never be sure."

Lance told the doctor
He’d try anything
The doctor said "Good,
Attitude is everything."

Lance received treatments
And he got really sick
The medicine called chemo
Was starting to do the trick

While Lance was getting better
He kept his spirits bright
He even would sneak out
Just to sit on his bike

Lance learned about cancer
His mom gave him flowers
He said “unity is strength”
And “knowledge is power”

Lance finally got better
But it took awhile
When he was all better
He just had to smile

The doctor said "Wait
I want you to know
Your cancer could always
Come back tomorrow."

Lance said, "Okay
There’s just one thing to do:
We’ll have to fight cancer
But I’ll need your help too."

So he hopped on his bike
Some friends rode with Lance
They traveled the world
They even went to France

France had the race
That was biggest of all
The winner wore yellow
And stood very tall

He wanted to win
More than anyone else
He knew that he could
He believed in himself

He rode on his bike
Through the mountains of France
All the crowd cheered
They shouted "GO LANCE!"

Though Lance once had cancer
He felt so alive
He’d beaten his cancer
Lance had survived

He finished in Paris
And he won first place
Lance was the champion
Lance won the race

He wore the yellow jersey
On the medal stand
And suddenly realized
“People know who I am.”

“If I give them yellow
Wrist bands to wear
Then they can beat cancer
And they won’t be scared.”

So Lance gave out
Wrist bands all over the place
He went back to France
And he won the race

He won 7 times
He was clearly the best
Last year he retired
So he could go rest

But Lance doesn’t rest
Which you knew all along
He travels the world
